KARACHI, June 28: The Pakistan Medical Association on Wednesday expressed concern over increasing air and noise pollution in the metropolis and termed the situation ‘highly dangerous’ for citizens.

According to a press release, PMA Karachi General Secretary Dr S.M. Qaiser Sajjad said that air and noise pollution had increased despite the High Court’s directives to the government for taking measures in this regard.

Noise generated by rickshaws, pressure horns and magic horns was creating negative impact on the hearing abilities and health of people, he added.

“Noise generated by rickshaws is between 95db to 110db, which is almost equal to noise from the engines of aircrafts (120-140db). Such situation adversely affects the hearing ability of people and multiplies diseases in human bodies,” he observed.Respiratory diseases, skin diseases, TB, flu, allergy and other dangerous diseases were increasing due to the increasing pollution in the city, he said, and demanded the government to take immediate action over prevailing unhealthy noise and pollution.

He urged the government to take measures for ensuring healthier environment and expressed hope that within the next three months, the situation would be controlled by the government, as had been ordered by the High Court of Sindh.

The PMA also requested people to help government in this regard, he added.—PPI
