PESHAWAR: With rain continuing to lash large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the second consecutive day on Friday, a child was killed and six people suffered injuries in related incidents in Lakki Marwat, Shangla and Kurram districts.

In Lakki Marwat, a six-year-old boy died when part of a house’s boundary wall collapsed due to heavy rain in the Haramatala area.

A police official identified the victim as Mohammad Zakria and said that he was immediately transported to the district headquarters hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Six people were also wounded when a car fell into a gorge in the Board area of Alpuri tehsil in Shangla district on Friday, Rescue 1122 said.

Roof collapses, power suspension, landslides reported

Spokesperson for Rescue 1122 Rasool Khan Sharif said that the car was coming in from Swat when it plunged into a gorge in the Board area, injuring six people.

He said the accident apparently occurred due to a slippery road due to continued heavy rain and the loss of the car’s control.

A spokesman for Rescue 1122 said that a team responded quickly after receiving a call from the spot and provided first aid to the injured and moved them to the district headquarters hospital in Alpuri.

The injured were identified as Inam Khan, Sajidullah, Sanaullah, Habibullah, Zakaria Khan and Hafizullah, all from Upper Dir district.

In Kurram district, 10 persons were injured in roof collapse incidents. The flooding in ravines and nullahs closed alternate routes, used by locals to travel to Peshawar due to the two-year-long closure of Thall-Parachinar Road.

Similarly, upper parts of Hazara Division received heavy rainfall, making the weather chilly.

The rain, which started in the early hours in Mansehra, Torghar, Kohistan and Kolai-Palas districts, continued intermittently throughout the day.

Several link roads in the division’s high-altitude areas were also blocked by landslides.

In a news release, Rescue 1122 warned people against undertaking unnecessary travel during the ongoing rough weather.

“People should avoid travelling to mountainous areas of Hazara Division unless necessary, and if they do, they should exercise caution while driving on wet roads,” it said.

Lower and Upper Dir also witnessed a fresh spell of torrential rains all through the day, which led to an unusual surge in waterflow in the Panjkora River.

No damage to public life or property was reported.

Residents said widespread rainfall was expected to have a positive impact on standing wheat and other seasonal crops. Experts noted that the rain would improve soil moisture and likely enhance overall crop yield, offering relief to farmers after a relatively dry period.

In the mountainous areas of Upper Dir, including Lowari Top, Kumrat Valley, Doog Dara, Jahaz Banda and Badgoai Top, as well as Bin Shahi Top and Kalpani Maidan Top in Lower Dir, snowfall was reported, causing a noticeable drop in temperatures. The cold weather prompted residents to resume the use of warm clothing.

The torrential rain caused significant inconvenience to people across Bajaur tribal district after the rain water accumulated on numerous roads and streets, disrupting life.

Residents said the fresh spell of rainfall, which began late on Thursday and continued without interruption until Friday evening, disrupted life across the district.

They told Dawn that rainwater flooding roads and streets in both residential and commercial areas had badly affected residents and disrupted vehicular movement.

The rain also disrupted business activity across the district as most trade centres remained closed on Friday.

Roofs of several houses collapsed in different areas due to heavy rains. However, no one was harmed.

The downpour disrupted power supply to several parts of the district, leaving residents without electricity until Friday evening.In Bannu, a house roof collapsed in the Lora Pul area of Tehsil Miryan, trapping a woman and two minor children under the debris.

Local residents and Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene immediately and launched a rescue operation. The woman and both children were successfully pulled out from the rubble.

According to Rescue 1122, the injured woman was provided first aid and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, while the condition of both children is reported to be critical.
