THATTA: The administration has launched a drive to plant 100,000 trees in the district and released 70,000 fish seelings in Keenjhar Lake under an ambitious plan.

Titled ‘Clean Keenjhar, Green Thatta’, the campaign was launched by Deputy Commissioner Sarmad Ali Bhagat by planting saplings at the lake and releasing the fish seedlings into the water.

He said the campaign was aimed at promoting protection of environment and restoration of ecological balance across the district.

The DC said special emphasis would be on preserving Keenjhar Lake — one of Sindh’s most significant natural and historical assets.

DC Bhagat visited various sites around the lake and received a detailed briefing focusing on the ongoing conservation efforts.

Speaking to the media, the DC said that the initiative would not only help curb pollution at and around the lake, but would also turn Thatta into a greener district.

He said protection of the Keenjhar Lake area was a collective responsibility of all stakeholders. He called for efforts at a large scale to safeguard other historical and tourist sites in Sindh.

Administration officials said the tree plantation drive would be carried out in collaboration with the forest eepartment, with focus on ensuring proper maintenance and survival of saplings.

Under another initiative aimed at giving a boost to aquatic biodiversity, the district administration, in coordination with the fisheries department, released around 70,000 fish seedlings into the lake.

DC Bhagat said that the initiative would help strengthen the lake’s ecosystem and help support livelihoods of local fishing communities. “Such measures are essential for the protection and sustainable development of our natural resources,” he added.
