KARACHI: The search for a minor girl who is feared to have drowned in an uncovered water main on Tuesday evening continued on Wednesday.

Steel Town SHO Gulzar Ali Tunio told Dawn that 12-year-old Sanam was fetching water from the open line of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation in Jokhio Goth when she drowned on Tuesday evening.

A search operation was launched which continued on Wednesday but to no avail, he said, adding that it may take several days to recover the body which might have been swept away due to the pressure of water.

He said a major portion of the line remained open from where the residents fetch drinking water. He said the KWSC had installed a hand-pump there but apparently it had malfunctioned, prompting the villagers to take water from the open line.

Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan told Dawn the search operation would resume on Thursday.

He said they had received information about the drowning of the girl on Tuesday at 7pm. He said the girl had slipped and fallen into the water channel, which is around 30 feet deep.
