QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening irrigation infrastructure, describing it as a pillar of agricultural development and economic stability.

Chairing a meeting in Quetta with parliamentary representatives from Nasirabad division and senior officials of the irrigation department, the chief minister reviewed ongoing development and rehabilitation projects, with key decisions taken to enhance water management and agricultural productivity.

The Rs5 billion Hairdin Drainage Project in Sohbatpur district was highlighted, with consensus to expedite completion to ensure timely benefits for farmers.

Rehabilitation of the Manjhooti and Uch canals will be included in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, aimed at addressing water shortages and supporting cultivators.

Mr Bugti directed authorities to adopt modern technology for monitoring and managing irrigation schemes. He stressed phased restructuring of canals and drainage systems to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

To maintain transparency, he instructed that project directors be appointed from relevant departments and emphasised stronger accountability mechanisms to guarantee effective use of public resources.

Highlighting the agricultural importance of Nasirabad Division, Mr Bugti described it as Balochistan’s “green belt” and “fruit basket”.

He underscored the urgent need for comprehensive measures to boost agricultural output.
