RAWALPINDI: Police have rounded up 13 people who were doing wheelie and attacked an electric bus when they were stopped, and recovered sticks from them and seized seven motorcycles, police said.
All the 13 detainees were produced in the local court of law for remand to further interrogate them. However, nine of them were remanded in police custody for one day as they will be produced in the court on Tuesday (today) after completion of remand, while the remaining four were underage, therefore, released, the police investigating officer said.
When asked have police constitutedspecial squads to check wheelie during Ramazan, he replied though the police were active in the city to check the wheelie for the whole night, but they (youngsters) do it after Sehri when there is no traffic on the roads especially the old airport road and Rahimabad area.
“Now they are under control,” the IO said. Police spokesman said that Chaklala Police swung into action and arrested 13 people who attacked a public service bus on Sunday night in the Chaklala area. Sticks were recovered from the detainees, and seven motorcycles used by them for wheelie were also recovered by the police.
Abdul Qadir Ali, captain of the green electric bus on Sunday registered an FIR with the Chaklala police saying that 300 to 400 youngsters attacked the bus with sticks and stones and smashed the window of the bus. During the attack on the bus, one of the travelers was also injured who was later shifted to hospital.
Meanwhile, the city traffic police issued a statement that a special squad is active in in Rawalpindiround the clock to take action against youndsters doing
wheelie, racing and against underage drivers. Special pickets have also been established at major roads in this regard.
On this occasion, Chief Traffic Officer Rawalpindi Farhan Aslam said that regular monitoring of mechanics who make alterations to motorcycles for wheelie is also underway and legal action would be taken against the mechanics if they found involved.
He further said that the elimination of the bloody sport of one-wheeling in Rawalpindi district is possible with the cooperation of citizens and especially parents.
Parents should play a positive role in discouraging underage drivers
wheelie and avoid giving cars or motorcycles to their minor children. Citizens should immediately report it to the traffic police helpline number to prevent wheelie.
