NAROWAL: The relatives of a woman, who allegedly died after being administered a wrong injection due to the negligence of a doctor and paramedical staff at Shakargarh Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital, staged a protest by placing her body on the premises of the facility on Monday.
According to the victim’s son, Shaukat, he brought his mother, Suraiyya Bibi (55), a resident of Rashidpura Mohalla, Shakargarh, to the local THQ Hospital at 8:25pm on Sunday for a check-up. He said that his mother came to the hospital emergency on foot with a high sugar level.
At the hospital’s emergency, he said, the duty doctor checked his mother’s blood pressure and sugar level and prescribed an injection that was brought by the staff nurse from the pharmacy. He said that his mother died as soon as the staff nurse administered the injection.
Following her death, a large number of her relatives and other locals gathered at the hospital and strongly protested against the alleged negligence of the doctor and the staff nurse by placing the body there.
A team of local police also reached the hospital after receiving the information about the protest. The deceased woman’s son accused the duty doctor and the staff nurse of administering the wrong injection to her.
He said that the duty doctor and the staff nurse had fled the hospital after his mother’s death.
Narowal District Health Authority (DHA) CEO Dr Adnan Iqbal told Dawn that the patient suffered a heart attack in the hospital’s emergency room after she was administered insulin to control her sugar level after her check-up.
The patient was treated according to the CPR and other medical protocols, he said, adding that diabetic patients do not show signs of a heart attack.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tayyab Khan said that four doctors were on duty at the THQ hospital, adding that Dr Tanzeel treated the female patient after a check-up.
He endorsed the health CEO’s stance that the patient was treated according to the SOPs.
However, the woman’s son demanded Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to order an impartial inquiry into the death of his mother and take action against those found responsible as per the law.
