LARKANA: During excavations Mohenjo-Daro, experts have discovered a protective wall (rampart) built for the city’s defense.

The rampart made of mud bricks has been discovered around the central city during the ongoing excavations by the Pakistan-America Joint Archaeological Mission under the supervision of American Prof Jonathan Mark Kenoyer and Ali Lashari.

Sadam Kumbhar, a public-relations officer (PRO) to the Sindh culture minister, told Dawn on Thursday that the department had released that news that day to the media.

In 1950 and 1951, British archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler identified it as a mud brick foundation in his research. Based on new excavations and evidence from ground layers, experts have now classified it as the city’s rampart.

According to the experts, this rampart was likely built to regulate trade, control movement and for the city’s administrative and planning system.

Provincial Minister for Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah congratulated the archaeologists on this important discovery.

This discovery further highlights the global significance of Sindh’s historical heritage, he said.

The discovery would promote research and tourism activities, he said, adding that the success of the Pakistan-America Joint Archaeological Mission was an excellent example of international cooperation.

The Sindh government would continue to provide all possible support for the protection, research and promotion of antiquities, the minister affirmed.
