KARACHI, May 29: The medical camp set up at Munno Goth, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, has been wound up as it did not receive fresh cases of gastroenteritis on Monday. The camp was established by the town administration of Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Saturday to provide medical aid to the affected people.

Talking to Dawn, Town Health Officer, Dr Imdadullah, said that situation was under control and virtually no case was gastroenteritis was reported on Sunday.

About 25 cases of gastroenteritis were reported as a result of a localized contamination of drinking water, he added, saying the problem of contamination and gastroenteritis was confined to three to four streets.

He said he had visited some of the houses and witnessed mixing of drinking water with sewage due to long prevailing practice of drawing water from pipelines by using suction pumps.

To a question, he said what he could gather about the deaths due to consumption of unfit water in Munno goth was that two persons, a woman of 35 and a child of 8 months died at their homes due to gastroenteritis on Friday. However, none of the patients brought to the emergency health camp of the government was found critically ill and a majority was sent back to homes after necessary treatment, including administration of drips.

He said residents of the affected area had reported him that quality of water was improving gradually and there was no panic among them now.
