KURRAM: Six people were shot dead when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in Mahoora, Lower Kurram, on Thursday, with police linking the killings to a feud between two families.

A senior police official told Dawn that the attackers targeted the vehicle going from Para Chamkani to Sadda, near Mahoora village, on the boundary between Upper and Lower Kurram, killing all but one passenger.

“The gunmen have been identified and raids are under way to arrest them,” Regional Police Officer Abbas Majeed Marwat said, adding that 24 people from the suspected family had been detained.

“Investigations are at an advanced stage,” he said, describing the assault as an act of revenge in a long-running feud. RPO Marwat said that “some miscreants are trying to exploit the incident and provoke sectarian conflict, but we know what this is about and are making efforts to arrest the actual culprits”.

Kurram, which borders Afghanistan, has witnessed sporadic sectarian violence in the past, often disrupting traffic on its main route that connects the tribal district with the rest of the country. Such incidents keep both residents and the administration on edge to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
