ISLAMABAD: While one million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters have been installed in Rawalpindi city and Cantt circle, Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has claimed that power theft has been eliminated at units where meters have been installed.

The AMI meters are equipped with modern features that automatically detect and report theft attempts and meter disturbances to the AMI Operation Centre. The balanced distribution system protects against system overload and tripping, significantly reducing the rate of transformer and meter burnouts.

During the last month, numerous power theft and meter accuracy disturbance cases were automatically flagged by the AMI system, after which timely raids were conducted and power pilferers were apprehended by field formations after getting intimation by the AMI central control room.

Power pilferers’ meters have been removed, detection bills charged, and legal proceeding applications have been filed for FIR registration against the culprits.

Chief Executive Officer Iesco Engineer Ch Khalid Mahmood said introduction of AMI meters was a revolutionary step in the power sector of Pakistan, having many advanced features.

“The deployment of AMI meters is a breakthrough for Iesco. This technology not only curbs theft but also ensures billing transparency, strengthens consumer confidence, and improves the efficiency of our distribution system. If anyone plays with the AMI meter or will disturb the meter accuracy using any mode, our team will catch them immediately by using AMI advanced technology,” he stated.

He also appreciated Chief Engineer Development Ch Kamran Aftab, Project Director AMI Mohsin Raza Gillani, and the entire AMI team for their achievement of installing one million AMI meters in Rawalpindi city and Rawalpindi cantt area.

Mr Mahmood added that AMI meters will play a central role in reducing line losses, supporting the government’s anti-theft campaign, and providing consumers with a more reliable power supply.

It is worth mentioning that due to AMI, automated and timely meter readings have been ensured. Consumers have been empowered to monitor their electricity usage and potential bills 24/7.
