Rawalpindi rains

Published August 21, 2025

YEAR after year, monsoon after monsoon, Rawalpindi and its residents suffer because of the city’s inadequate drainage system. This results in widespread waterlogging on roads and streets, causing severe traffic congestion and making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations. Standing water also becomes an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and malaria.

Moreover, the overflowing drains and stagnant water pose serious health hazards, especially for children and the elderly. The accumulation of garbage and debris further worsens the situation, leading to unhygienic conditions and contributing to the spread of various illnesses.

The authorities concerned should take immediate and effective measures. These should include upgrading and maintaining the drainage infrastructure, ensuring timely cleaning of nullahs and canals, and implementing robust waste management practices. Public awareness campaigns are also essential to encourage responsible disposal of waste and discourage dumping in open spaces.

The residents of Rawalpindi hope to see swift and meaningful action from the relevant departments. It is imperative that steps are taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of people during the monsoon.
