We all grew up watching Scooby-Doo cartoons. Our love for mystery is often tied to the funny and spooky adventures of Scooby and Shaggy. However, Megan Cooley Peterson’s Scooby-Doo!: Revenge from a Watery Grave takes the gang in a slightly different direction. This book is part of an educational ‘A States of Matter Mystery’ series that mixes science with mystery, teaching new concepts while keeping the fun of Mystery Inc. alive.
The story begins when yachts start disappearing near a foggy harbour. Some people believe a ghost is behind it, but Scooby, Shaggy and the gang don’t fall for the trick. They begin investigating and soon use their knowledge of science — mainly solids, liquids, and gases — to figure out how the “ghostly fog” was made. As always, the gang sets a trap and this time the trap itself is based on the same science ideas, making the ending both clever and educational.
The best part of this book is how it explains science through mystery. Ideas like condensation and evaporation are not just told to the reader, but shown in action as the gang solves the case. This makes it much easier for kids to see how these things work in real life. Instead of feeling like a classroom lesson, science becomes part of the adventure.
Scooby-Doo himself has a minor role here, with fewer lines and more focus on his antics. Since the mystery takes place around ships, yachts and lighthouses, fans may also miss seeing the iconic Mystery Machine. However, the use of technology in the story makes up for its absence and keeps the plot moving.
The book is also designed with young readers in mind. Alongside the main story, there are colourful “Fun fact” boxes that pop up on the pages.
These explain science terms in simple language and give extra information without interrupting the mystery. At the end, a short glossary defines key words. Overall, Scooby-Doo! Revenge from a Watery Grave succeeds as both a mystery and a teaching tool. For children who struggle to grasp science concepts, this book transforms a science lesson into an adventure with familiar, beloved characters.
