SUKKUR: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl Sindh general secretary Rashid Mehmood Soomro has demanded that provincial and city governments should tender an apology to public for their utter failure in governance and crisis management during heavy rain in Karachi.

Rulers had completely failed to handle the aftermath of the heavy rainfall in the provincial capital, said Soomro in a press release issued by the party in Jacobabad on Wednesday.

He strongly reacted to the situation in Karachi following recent heavy rain, stating that the downpour had completely exposed incompetence and failure of the provincial government.

He demanded that mayor of Karachi must resign immediately. “For the past 15 years, [huge] funds have been consumed, yet Karachi and the entire Sindh have turned into ruins. Drain cleaning, emergency plans and new constructions exist only on paper,” he remarked.

He said that Karachi was facing one of its worst crises after the rainfall and both the provincial and local governments had completely failed to handle the situation. Women and children were suffering and facing miserable conditions, and citizens were facing extreme difficulties in reaching their homes,” he noted.

Soomro said in a lighter vein it seemed people would now have to buy boats to cope with post-rain conditions in Karachi, clearly show it had no guardian or caretaker.

He accused the Pakistan Peoples Party of plundering public resources while depriving citizens of even the most basic amenities. JUI-F had issued directives to the party’s chapter to provide relief to affected residents of Karachi, he said.

He demanded that the provincial and city governments must apologise to public for complete failure in governance and post-rain crisis management in Karachi.
