KARACHI: A doctor was shot dead in Lyari in a suspected targeted attack on Monday evening, police said.

They said that unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle intercepted Dr Shambho Lal, 60, inside a park on the Mirza Adam Khan Road, opened fire on him and rode away.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said the doctor was on his routine walk when he was targeted.

He said the doctor sustained three bullet wounds and was rushed to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, where he died during treatment.

The Crime Scene Unit visited the scene and collected evidence, including three spent bullet casings fired from a 9mm pistol. The casings were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis, the police said.

City SSP Arif Aziz said investigators were trying to collect CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

‘Monetary dispute’

DIG Raza said the killing appeared to be the result of a personal enmity.

He elaborated that initial investigation revealed the deceased doctor was involved in an over Rs6 million dispute with certain individuals.

He said that the victim had previously lodged two FIRs at the Darakhshan and Napier police stations against three individuals.

A case has been registered on the complaint of victim’s son Dr Deepak Lal against three unknown persons under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Kalakot police station.

He told the police that his father had a monetary dispute with some people and he suspected their involvement in the murder.
