KARACHI: Dozens of women motorcyclists staged a ‘bike rally’ on Sunday as part of activities planned to mark the country’s Independence Day.
The women bikers covered a distance of 29 kilometres from the Quaid-i-Azam House, also known as Flagstaff House, to the historic Chaukhandi graveyard.
The event was organised by the provincial department of tourism and culture.
Culture Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah and Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani jointly inaugurated the rally.
Speaking on the occasion, the ministers emphasised the spirit of national unity and women empowerment.
During the event, the national flag was hoisted, the national anthem was sung, and a cake was cut to mark the Independence Day, said a press release issued after the event.
Minister Shah highlighted the large turnout of women bikers and praised their enthusiasm.
He added that large-scale events are planned in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur, and that prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated cars, shops and streets during the celebrations.
Mr Ghani said on the occasion that the bike rally was one of several events taking place across the province as part of Independence Day and Ma’araka-i-Haq celebrations.
He announced that a grand mushaira will be held on Aug 9 at Karachi Expo Centre and that on the nights of August 13 and 14, a mega concert will take place at the National Bank Stadium.

Meanwhile, under the supervision of Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, Independence Day celebrations are underway in Karachi, said another press release issued on Sunday.
It said that, the Deputy Commissioner of Malir conducted a flag-hoisting ceremony, while the DC-Central organised tree plantation in various areas.
