KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has finalised the construction of a new flyover on Azeempura Road aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing urban infrastructure, a statement said on Sunday.

The project will provide a direct, signal-free connection between Shahrah-i-Bhutto and Sharae Faisal — two of the city’s busiest arteries — offering a smoother and faster route, especially towards Jinnah International Airport, the statement added.

“The flyover will span approximately 500 metres in length, designed to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow and improved accessibility for thousands of daily commuters,” it stated.

The decision, it said, was taken at a meeting chaired by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab held to finalise the PC-1 of the project.

The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, Chief Engineer Zulfiqar Abro, Financial Adviser Gulzar Ali and other senior officials.

“With the recent approval of a block allocation worth Rs1.4 billion for the project, this flyover is poised to become a vital alternative route for Karachiites, especially in light of the ongoing developments along Shahrah-i-Bhutto. The project not only aims to reduce travel time but also supports the city’s broader vision of building sustainable and resilient urban infrastructure,” the statement quoted the mayor as saying.

Following formal approval from the Planning and Development Board, the statement said that work on the flyover will begin immediately, with a completion timeline of one year.

Mr Wahab emphasised that this initiative reflects the city’s commitment to smart traffic planning and modern urban mobility, ensuring long-term relief for commuters and improved connectivity across districts.
