KARACHI: The owner of a jewellery shop was shot dead and a woman customer wounded by robbers in the Korangi area on Tuesday evening, police said.

The incident sparked a protest by residents and shopkeepers, who took to the streets and blocked the main road in the area for vehicular traffic.

Area SHO Adeel Afzal told Dawn that four robbers entered a jewellery shop and snatched 35 gold nose pins in Korangi No 2. Then they proceeded towards another shop, held the shopkeeper, identified as Mateen Muqeem, 32, and a woman customer at gunpoint and started looting jewellery.

The SHO said that the shopkeeper put up resistance and the robbers resorted to firing and fled with the booty. Mateen and the customer, identified as Kabeeri Rafiq, 62, suffered bullet wounds and were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where the man died during treatment.

He said that Mateen sustained bullet wounds in the leg and died of excessive bleeding. He said the condition of the woman was stated to be out of danger as she was shot in the foot.

Mateen was son of Abdul Muqeem, the general secretary of the area jewellers’ market association.
