BAN ON FISHING: In a recent move, the government of Sindh has lifted its fishing ban, allowing such activities to resume from July 1. The ban, which typically lasts two months during June and July, aims at protecting marine life and future fishery stocks by allowing fish and shrimp to breed naturally. Wildlife and marine experts have expressed serious concerns about the environmental and economic consequences of this decision. Pakistan’s shrimp production has already declined significantly, from 27,000 tonnes in 2020 to 17,400 tonnes in 2024. Lifting the ban early will further deplete marine resources, ultimately harming the fishing communities. Besides, fishing during this season would be dangerous due to rough sea conditions.

EXTENDED LOADSHEDDING: The residents of Shah Faisal Colony pay their electricity bills regularly, but continue to experience at least five spells of load-shedding every day, with each lasting about three hours; a total of 15 hours in a 24-hour cycle without power supply. Even on the 9th and 10th of Muharram recently, the loadshedding continued unabated. The outages disrupt daily life, including studies, domestic chores, even sleep. The authorities should improve the overall electricity supply mechanism.

NO REGARD FOR RULES: Care-lessness has now become a part of people’s behaviour. Drivers follow their own rules and do not park their vehicles at the designated places, jeopardising the safety of others. Pedestrians, on the other hand, also neglect road-crossing protocols. As a result, the number of traffic accidents is increasing. Moreover, getting a driver’s licence has become a mere formality. Traffic constables are found missing from their duty sites. Even if they are present, they mostly remain inactive. This leads to traffic jams, road rage incidents and breach of traffic laws. It is high time the government adopted concrete meaures to save the loss of lives.
