DADU, May 14: A large number of villagers and activists of nationalist parties marched from Sita Road to Dadu Sugar Mills on Sunday in protest against police torture of sugar mills employees and their family members outside the Sindh governor’s house in Karachi.

The 15-kilometre long march was organized by Sindh National Front in which activists of the Pakistan People’s Party, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Jeay Sindh Students Federation and Awami Tehrik took part.

PPP MPA Sharfunnisa Leghari also participated in the march which culminated in a protest demonstration in front of the main gate of the mill bringing traffic at Phulji-Sita roads to a standstill.

SNF leaders Ali Raza Palijo, PPP’s Raza Mohammad Mallah, JSQM’s Sardar Chandio and a social worker Ali Damsaz Lakhair said the closure of Dadu Sugar Mills had badly affected the area’s economy and agriculture.

They demanded that police officials involved in the torture of sugar mills employees and their family members be terminated and criminal cases be registered against them.

They alleged that some influential people of the area had stolen away in bits and pieces precious machinery of the sugar mills.

As the road-block prolonged District Naib Nazim Syed Mohammad Shah and Nazim UC Pyaro Goth Syed Gambal Shah rushed to get it opened for the traffic.

They assured the protesters that the district government send a delegation of union council nazims to the chief minister and other authorities to get the problem resolved.

SOYEM: Soyem for late PML MPA and special assistant to the Sindh chief minister, Dr Manzoor Leghari, was held at his native village Haji Khan in Johi taluka on Sunday.

MNA Rafique Ahmed Jamali, former Law Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, Qazi Shafique Mahessar and MPAs Sadaqat Ali Jatoi and Ehsan Ali Jatoi attended Soyem.
