LAKKI MARWAT: The police have formed a special team to look into circumstances surrounding the death of a female nurse from Bannu’s Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital by suicide.

An official told Dawn that SP (Investigation) Sajid Mumtaz Khan would lead the investigation team whose other members included DSP (Saddar Circle) Mofiz Khan, DSP (Investigation) Abdul Khanan, SHO Asmatullah, investigation officer Imran Khan, and DSB and CDR in charge officers.

He said the team had been directed to complete the investigation “fairly, transparently and on merit as soon as possible,” and share progress of investigation with relevant police officers on a daily basis.

The nurse had died after consuming some tablets on June 14 allegedly after being harassed by a male employee of the hospital.

Adnan told the police that his sister died by suicide after receiving “messages of harassment” from that person.

The official said the investigation team had interrogated several relevant hospital employees in the presence of Shabniaz Khan from the Bannu MTI board of governors to about the alleged role of the suspect in the case.

“The suspect is untraceable, with the police making efforts to arrest him,” he claimed.

He said the investigation officers had been directed by their boss to expand the scope of investigation and record statements of officials and employees of the nursing college as well as witnesses.

The hospital has also initiated an inquiry into the matter.

SECURITY PLAN: The district police have formulated a security plan for the peaceful observance of Ashura in Lakki Marwat, saying policemen will be deployed at sensitive places, on rooftops and on procession routes in sufficient numbers.

The information was disclosed during a meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Zeeshan Abdullah at the District Headquarters Complex, Tajazai, here the other day.

DPO Mohammad Jawad Ishaq told the meeting that the police would examine imambargahs and ensure security clearance of procession routes.

He said digging and other construction work on those routes would be prohibited.

The DC said the administration would ban the display of arms, pillion riding, use of tinted glasses in vehicles, and strangers’ stay in hotels and inns during Muharram.

He said that a health team comprising doctors and paramedics would perform duty round the clock along with mourners during the first 10 days of Muharram.

He asked the officials of rescue emergency service to ensure availability of ambulances and firetrucks at the venue of mourners’ majalis in Lakki city.

Mr Zeeshan said that the tehsil municipal administration would install closed-circuit television cameras with DVR facility on the routes of processions.

He ordered the establishment of a control room at the office of the assistant commissioner in Lakki city and said the civic body would also fulfil its responsibility to clean processions’ routes, sprinkle water on roads and install streetlights.
