BAJAUR: A man was killed and two women were wounded after a mortar shell fired from Afghanistan’s side hit their house in the hilly area of Bajaur district’s Salarzai tehsil, police and residents said on Thursday.

The area people told Dawn that the incident occurred in Taranoo village when a mortar shell fire from Afghanistan’s Kunar province landed at the house of a local resident, Lali Gul.

A man identified as Gul Bacha, 60, was killed on the spot while two women, identified as Tasleem Bibi, 25, and Rahroon Bibi, 26, sustained injuries in the incident.

Israr Khan, a public relations officer (PRO) of the district police, when contacted confirmed the incident. He said that both the wounded women were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital Khar for treatment.

He said a team of senior police officials, accompanied by several personnel, visited the affected home and collected evidence. Mr Israr said the police officials also met members of the bereaved family and expressed sympathies with them.

Meanwhile, additional deputy commissioner (general) Shahid Rafique Gandapur along with other district administration officers visited the DHQ Hospital in the evening and inquired after the health of the two women wounded in the mortar shell attack, said an official statement.

“Mr Rafique on the occasion assured the affected families of all possible assistance and directed the hospital administration to ensure immediate and effective treatment for the injured,” the statement concluded.
