THE continued reliance on the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee for determining Eid dates in Pakistan deserves a closer look, especially with the significant advance-ments in science. While the committee sometimes uses tools like telescopes, its core method often leans towards direct visual observation and testimonies.

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmos-phere Research Commission (Suparco) in contrast has the capacity to provide accurate astronomical predictions. When a reliable national scientific body can offer highly precise information about the moon’s movement and visibility, why does the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee stick to its current method, using older scientific tools like telescopes, but not the more advanced capabilities of space satellites and stations?

Telescopes, while helpful, are limited by Earth’s atmosphere and the observer’s location. Data from space, however, provides a much clearer and unambiguous determination of the moon’s position and illumination, unaffected by local weather or geography.

It is time for our religious leaders and scholars to consider how to best integrate scientific advancements. Using Suparco’s data, which is derived from cutting-edge calculations and potentially supported by space-based observations, as a primary basis for the committee’s final decision would bring uniformity and transparency to Eid dates. This would not only make things easier for everyone, but also help Pakistan align with the much-needed demands of the modern scientific age.
