LAHORE: Punjab remains in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching a scorching 45.4°C in Rahim Yar Khan and 44.5°C in Bahawalnagar on Thursday, while the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned that temperatures could rise further by 4–7°C by May 19, exacerbating conditions across the province.
Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Multan face extreme heat, with temperatures hovering above 43°C. Kot Addu and Bhakkar recorded 44°C, while Lahore and Faisalabad saw highs of 42°C.
The PDMA directed all hospitals to ensure emergency measures and set up heatwave counters for the treatment of heatstroke cases. The authority claimed to have ensured clean water supply in Cholistan. It also issued directives to stock heat-related medicines and launched public awareness campaigns via media.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia urged citizens to avoid outdoor labour, wear light cotton clothing and stay hydrated. Special care had been advised for children, the elderly, and the sick.
Maximum temperatures recorded in Rahim Yar Khan was 45.4°C, Bahawalnagar 44.5°C, Bhakkar/Kot Addu 44.0°C, Multan 42.5°C, Lahore 42.0°C, Murree/Rawalakot at 25.3°C and 23.5°C, respectively.
The authority further advised the citizens to limit outdoor activities from 10am to 4pm, use ORS and cool water to prevent dehydration and report emergencies to PDMA helpline 1129.
With no immediate relief forecast, authorities urge strict adherence to safety guidelines as the heatwave intensifies.
