PESHAWAR: Two police officers were martyred and another injured in a suicide attack targeting a police van on the Peshawar Ring Road on Sunday night, police said.

The blast in the vicinity of the Cha­mkani police station was heard across several neighbourhoods of the provincial capital.

SSP Operations Masood Bangash confirmed the police van was the target. “Two personnel have embraced martyrdom and one has been seriously injured.”

The martyred officials were identified as Sub-Inspector Laiq Zada Khan and Constable Alamzaib, both posted at Chamkani police station.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur strongly condemned the incident and directed the police to submit a detailed report.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Gwadar attack

In Gwadar, a police constable was martyred in an exchange of fire with armed men fleeing after hurling a hand grenade at a house, officials said on Sunday.

Police said the armed men, riding motorcycles, hurled a hand grenade at the residence near Syed Hashmi Avenue, injuring three men hailing from Punjab.

The attackers attempted to flee the scene but were pursued by policemen.

During the ensuing gunfight, one of the attackers was killed and another wounded and arrested, Makran range DIG Parvez Umrani said at a press conference alongside Gwadar SSP Ziaullah Khan Mandokhail.

DIG Umrani paid tribute to the fallen officer, Constable Muhammad Khumari, and stressed the sacrifices of martyrs would never be forgotten.

The men injured in the grenade attack were identified as Abdul Ghaffar, Naveed Ahmed and Anwar, all hailing from Muzaffargarh. They were admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
