GUJRAT: The Punjab government has approved the upgrade of the Shehbaz Sharif Park at the cost of Rs54m.

Spread over 90 acres at the bank of river Chenab on the Gujrat side, the park is the largest recreational facility in the region.

The people of Gujrat, Wazirabad, Phalia, Alipur Chatha and adjoining areas of the district would also visit the park on special occasions and weekends.

Official sources said that the upgrade scheme had been proposed by the district administration, keeping in view the visitors’ feedback.

The scheme includes development of a lake with boating facility as well as the installation of swings and new lights whereas a cafeteria and construction of offices for the managerial staff is also on the cards. The project got special approval from the cabinet more than a month ago.

It is learnt that following the approval in the cabinet, the Local Government and Community Development Department, has sent the matter to the Planning and Development for further action.

An official of Gujrat District Council says the execution of the project might be launched within the current fiscal year; however, the full funding of the scheme would be released in the next fiscal year.

He added that new facilities and attractions for the families and children would increase the footfall in the park.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has also approved construction of the Union Council Complex in Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman’s native Chelianwala village in district Mandi Bahauddin at the cost of Rs100m.

The Chelianwala union council has already been developed as a ‘model UC’ with the improvement of basic infrastructure and amenities.
