LOWER DIR: A retired army soldier was shot dead by unknown persons when he was on way to a local mosque to offer the night prayers on Friday, residents and police said. The deceased, Subedar Abdul Zaiq, a resident of Tor Camp, Munda, aged 72.

Police sources confirmed that the victim had no known enmities. They launched an investigation into the incident. The deceased was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard in Tor Qila on Saturday.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, the higher secondary school of the University of Malakand held its annual prize distribution ceremony at the university’s convocation hall on Saturday, with Vice-Chancellor Prof Rashid Ahmad as the chief guest.

Students showcased a variety of performances, including Hamd, Naat, national songs, speeches, and cultural presentations, earning applause from the audience. The event was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, parents, and alumni.

Awards were distributed among students for excellence in academics, discipline, personal conduct, academic improvement, attendance, and cleanliness. Teachers were also recognised for outstanding contributions to teaching, administrative work, student training, and maintaining high academic standards.
