KOHAT: Former district nazim Engineer Malik Asad was killed here on Tuesday when unidentified persons attacked his vehicle near Gandiali on Rawalpindi Highway.

He was brother of martyred capital city police officer (CCPO) Peshawar Malik Saad and Malik Saleem, a collector of customs in Karachi, who was also killed some time back.

An official of Gumbat police station Ayaz said that Malik Asad was going in his vehicle to Islamabad when it came under heavy firing. He died on the spot while his companion, Fazal Haleem, was shifted to KDA hospital in injured condition by Rescue 1122.

The regional police officer of Kohat division, Abbas Majeed Marwat, said that Malik Asad was on his way to Rawalpindi when his car was ambushed by motorists, who were chasing him from Kohat city.

He said the attackers later met an accident while fleeing a kilometre away from the crime scene. They left their car and disappeared on foot.

Sources said that factor of terrorism in the attack could not be ruled out because terrorists were targeting high-profile people in the province.

DPO Dr Zahidullah Khan ordered a search operation in the area. The area was cordoned off by police teams.

The deceased had remained district nazim of Kohat from 2003 to 2006. His funeral would be held at 2pm today in Family Park.
