It was the holiday season, and Ayesha had little to do. Bored and restless, she missed her friends, but they had all left, some had gone to their villages, while others were vacationing in the Northern areas.
Just yesterday, Ayesha received a message from her best friend, Marina, who wrote about her trip to the Northern areas and how much fun she was having. Marina described the serene atmosphere and breathtaking scenery. She even mentioned that their group of friends had planned the trip together, but had forgotten to invite Ayesha.
That stung. Ayesha felt a lump in her throat as tears welled up in her eyes. Unable to hold back, she went to her mum and told her everything.
Her mum gently consoled her, saying, “Maybe they forgot to invite you because you don’t stay in touch with them much outside of school.”
After that, Ayesha received no more messages from Marina. She figured her friend must be having so much fun that she had completely forgotten to write. Even worse, Marina didn’t respond to Ayesha’s message. Hurt and disappointed, Ayesha made up her mind never to talk to her again.
When the vacation ended and the school reopened, Ayesha began ignoring Marina. Whenever Marina tried to talk to her, she would brush her off, claiming she had important work to do. Ayesha wasn’t entirely wrong to feel this way — something in her heart told her their long friendship had come to an end.
Marina quickly noticed Ayesha’s change in behaviour and soon realised why she was acting so distant. She hadn’t sent Ayesha another message, nor had she invited her on the trip.
Feeling troubled, Marina confided in her friends. “Ayesha isn’t talking to me,” she sighed. “She thinks we ignored her, but in reality, we’ve been planning a surprise for her birthday. It’s coming up next week, and we’ve been working on this for so long. I just hope it’ll all be worth it.”
The day everyone had been waiting for finally arrived. Ayesha, however, had completely forgotten that it was her birthday — but everyone else remembered. It was Saturday and their college was off, so that morning, Marina showed up at her house.
“Hi, Ayesha! I’m here to tell you that we’re all going on an epic adventure. Wanna come?” Marina asked her excitedly.
But Ayesha, still upset, replied angrily, “What’s the point of taking me now when you always forget me?”
Marina simply laughed, and at that very moment, the rest of their friends showed up and, along with her parents, everyone cheered in unison, “Happy Birthday, Ayesha!”
Marina then revealed the truth, “Everything I said during the holidays was just a prank — I never actually went anywhere with my friends. It was all part of the plan to give you an epic surprise!”
She continued, “In reality, we were all planning a two-day trip to a farm house out of the city with our families, and mainly to celebrate your birthday. When I realised my prank had gone too far and was affecting our friendship, I tried to tell you the truth so many times, but you refused to listen.”
Now understanding the whole situation, Ayesha smiled and forgave them. She happily cut the cake, popped balloons and played games with her friends.
Her mother gently reminded her, “Friendships shouldn’t end over small misunderstandings.”
The next day, as planned, their families set off for a farmhouse trip. As Ayesha looked around at the people she cared about, she thought to herself, “Without a doubt, this is the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
Marina and Ayesha then made a promise — to remain best friends forever, no matter how misleading the circumstances might be.
