SUKKUR: Sukkur police on Monday claimed to have arrested three suspects and foiled their attempt to smuggle a large cache of arms and ammunition through a private courier service to Rohri taluka.

Police received a tip-off about the suspects identified later as Gul Rais Pathan, Abdul Waheed Shar and Shafiq Ahmed Kamangar trying to smuggle small arms and a large quantity of bullets through a private courier service, and arrested them, said officials.

They said the suspects were members of an interprovincial arms smuggling gang and police had found three TT pistols, six pistol magazines and 720 Kalashnikov bullets in their possession.

They said that the suspects used to bring large consignments of arms and ammunition from Peshawar to criminals in the district through the private courier service. Cases had been registered against the suspects under the Sindh Arms Act, they said.

Sources in police said that Sukkur DIG captain (retired) Fasail Abdullah Chachar formed a special team headed by SSP Azhar Khan to track down criminals and smugglers operating in the district. Police had succeeded to curb crimes and social evils, they claimed.
