KARACHI: A young woman was killed while two others were injured in a stampede during distribution of free rations among the needy arranged by a local union committee on Sunday evening in Baldia Town, police and rescue services officials said.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that UC chairman Shahzad had arranged the event inside Parda Park in Baldia.

He said police were present outside the venue. When the gate of the park was opened, a large number of women attempted to enter at once. During the attempt, several women fell and got injured in the ensuing stampede, he added.

He said a young woman was killed while two others were injured.

The body and injured were taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson said in a statement that the deceased woman was aged around 22 years. He said that she could not be identified till late in the night. However, one injured woman was identified as Gul Malik, 35.
