KARACHI, April 16: President Musharraf has informed a Sunni Ulema’s delegation that six government agencies are investigating the Nishtar Park blast and he himself is monitoring its progress.

He assured them that some progress had been made but its disclosure at this stage was not appropriate.

This was stated by Mufti Munibur Rehman, who led the 15-member delegation which called on the president at the Chief Minister’s House on Sunday.

Talking to Dawn after the meeting, Mufti Munibur Rehman said that President Musharraf had promised fair investigation and assured them that those found involved would not be spared.

He said the president had recognised Ahle Sunnat Jamaat as a peaceful organisation and said that credit went to Ahle Sunnat that despite such a big tragedy and a massive funeral they observed a peaceful strike.

Sunni Tehrik spokesman Shahid Ghauri said that he had drawn attention of the president to target killings and kidnappings of its workers and pointed out how the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had turned certain localities in the city as “no go areas” for ST workers.

He said the president observed that it was not in his knowledge and assured that their genuine complaints would be addressed.

President Musharraf asked ulema to extend full cooperation to the government in rooting out extremism, adds APP.
