ISLAMABAD: A resident of the capital got a case registered about theft in his house after lodging a complaint against the police officials for their refusal to do so.

Tariq Mehmood lodged a complaint at the deputy inspector general of police (DIG) complaint cell after officials at the Ramna police station did not file a case about the theft.

The citizen in his complaint stated that at about 3am on October 29 Samsung Note 8, Samsung A12, Infinix Note 12, Oppo A9, iPhone 12, Samsung Galaxy, cash Rs100,000 and grocery worth Rs40,000 were stolen from his house. He approached the Ramna police station but officials there did not register a case. He requested the DIG for instruction to concerned officials to register the case for recovery of the stolen cash and valuables and punishment to the culprits.

Officials of the capital police said in response to the complaint, directives were issued after which the FIR was registered.

However, no action was taken against the station clerk, duty officer or station house officer of the Ramna police station over their failure to receive the complaint and register the FIR.

The officials said the case registration by the capital police in the current year remained 36.43 per cent. The police registered only 18,628 FIRs in response to 51,123 complaints received from January 1 to September 30.

Apparently, the police seemed reluctant to register 63.47 per cent (32,495) of the cases. Either this is an attempt to downplay the crime rate in the city or the police are not convinced that the complainants were victims.
