KARACHI, Feb 4: Speakers at a demonstration here on Monday criticized the indifferent attitude of the government towards transport issues in the city and demanded that fares be lowered as fuel prices have been declining.

The demonstration was organized at Karachi Press Club by the Action Committee for Civic Problems. “While fares are always raised immediately after a slight increase in fuel prices, the fares have not been lowered though POL prices have fallen considerably,” they said.

Pointing out that the mass transit system in almost all the mega cities of the world comprised local railway, they demanded that the Karachi Circular Railway be revived so that people could travel at a comparatively lower cost.

They demanded that the lowest fare be fixed at Rs2 with the highest not more than Rs5.

They urged the government to phase out minibuses, coaches etc., and steps be taken to introduce large buses so that the city roads did not remain congested.

Shah Mohammad Shah, Hafiz Mohammad Taqi, Habibuddin Junaidi, Shaikh Ismail, Baseer Naveed, Manzoor Razi, Liaquat Sahi, Haji Yusuf Khan, Shaikh Majeed, Wakeel Sawati and others spoke on the occasion.
