KOHAT: Three girls and two women drowned in separate accidents in the Gumbat tehsil of Kohat district on Friday.

In the first incident, two women and a girl picnicking at Garang dam drowned while trying to save each other from drowning, local residents said.

Rescue 1122 media coordinator Jawad Khan quoting eyewitnesses said that as soon as they received a distress call from the control room that three woman had drowned in the dam, teams of divers and medical experts reached the spot.

He said the divers retrieved the bodies after two hours of efforts.

Eyewitnesses said that Sidra Bibi, 14, went into the waters, and when she did not come out, her mother, Naheeda Bibi, 32, jumped in to pull her out. But, she did not emerge from the water. Soon their relative, Sadia Bibi, 27, while trying to reach out to them also lost her life. All of them belonged to Mohallah Awan of Gumbat.

In the second incident, two girls drowned in a pond in Taulanj Qadeem area of Gumbat.

Rescue 1122 dispatched teams of divers to the area soon after receiving emergency calls from the control room.

The rescue service’s media coordinator said that the divers with the help of local volunteers retrieved the bodies from the pond and took them to a medical facility.

The victims were identified as Emaan, 9, and Faiza Bibi, 10, residents of Torki Ismailkhel area.

The bodies were shifted to a hospital, wherefrom they were handed over to the relatives after autopsy.
