AS we face heatwaves in most cities, the repercussions pose a major risk to those affected. People going out and being exposed to direct sunlight from 10am to 3pm are more prone to life-threatening heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

School timings usually end for the morning shift and begin for the afternoon shift at around noon. It is heartbreaking to see pale, drained and exhausted children in drenched uniform returning home after school in summers. It is happening for the last few years. Things are so bad that school holidays were announced for one week and examination papers were postponed.

There is a marked shift in weather patterns. June and July are no longer the hottest two months in Pakistan. May has started being sizzling hot, while July is relatively more associated with light rain. Similarly, December is no longer the coldest month in the country anymore because January and February are much chillier. The relevant authorities should look into the matter of designated school holidays. In the best interest of the children, we should adjust our school academic calendar and vacations according to the temperature shift across the year.
