ISLAMABAD: The capital witnessed a momentous occasion as the Republic of Lithuania and Pakistan celebrated the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

The event was marked by fruitful discussions and reflections on the dynamic journey of both nations over the past three decades.

The Lithuanian delegation, led by Vice Foreign Minister Egidijus Meilunas, included Counsellor of the Indo-Pacific Directorate Edita Krisciuniene and Attache Ugnius Mardosa from the Export and Investment Promotion Division. Chief guest Senator Sherry Rehman in her remarks welcomed the delegation, expressing optimism that the visit would pave the way for enhanced cooperation in economic, energy, trade and tourism sectors.

Vice Foreign Minister Meilunas highlighted Lithuania’s significant progress since establishing diplomatic ties with Pakistan, just four years after regaining independence following 50 years of Soviet occupation. He also noted Lithuania’s 20th anniversary of membership in the European Union and NATO, which brought stability, security, and a firm commitment to the rule of law and human rights. This period of transformation positioned Lithuania as an integral part of the European and Euro-Atlantic family.

The delegation’s discussions held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier were characterised by mutual interest and a deep understanding of both countries’ positions and concerns. Topics ranged from bilateral relations and EU-Pakistan ties to the broader political and economic developments in South Asia and Europe. Meilunas emphasised the importance of uniting efforts to preserve a world order based on rules and international law amid challenging global times.

Senator Sherry Rehman lauded Lithuania’s achievements, noting its status as a global leader in the hi-tech service sector, businesses and trade, despite its small Baltic size. She underscored the potential for collaboration in business advisory councils, port and shipping sectors, and digital technology.

“Pakistan’s youthful population, with 65pc under 30, can benefit from Lithuania’s advancements in digital technology,” she said, adding that relationship between Lithuania and Pakistan had been further strengthened by notable visits, such as PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s visit to Vilnius last year as foreign minister where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding for future cooperation.

Vice Foreign Minister Meilunas expressed gratitude for the representation of Lithuania in Pakistan by Honorary Consul General Masud Khan, acknowledging his contributions to bilateral relations. He conveyed his hopes for the next 30 years to be marked by successful and productive cooperation based on mutual respect and friendship.

The event concluded with a shared vision for continued prosperity and success for both nations, reflecting a solid foundation for future partnerships and mutual growth.
