TRAGIC ACCIDENTS: The recent traffic accident in Sahiwal that claimed four young lives exposed the negligent attitude of traffic police and highway authorities. The frequency of such accidents shows how lowly we value human life. The government should adopt a vigilant approach instead of taking band-aid measures to control such incidents. Traffic laws should be strictly enforced. All motorcyclists must be bound to wear helmets. One-way roads should have more traffic wardens for better vigilance. Heavy vehicles, cars and motorcycles should be allocated separate lanes to avoid accidents. In case of lane violation, strict fines should be imposed on the erring drivers on the spot by the wardens.

INDEPENDENCE OF JUDICIARY: Judicial independence is the cornerstone of a fair and just society. When this independence is eroded, the entire legal system crumbles. Justice becomes a commodity for the highest bidder, and the rights of ordinary citizens are trampled. The concept of separation of powers is sacrosanct, and should be treated as such. A healthy democracy thrives on checks and balances within the system, but when the one arm seeks to manipulate the other, this equilibrium is shattered. A sustained commitment to upholding judicial independence is needed. Only then can Pakistan move forward and ensure a just society.

TIME TO ACT: From Safoora Goth to Jail Chowrangi and beyond, there are absolutely no streetlights on the University Road in Karachi. The situation is the same on all the major roads in the area, such as Stadium Road, Rashid Minhas Road and Abul Hasan Ispahani Road, which makes night-time driving very difficult. Moreover, snatchers and muggers are highly active in the area, especially after sunset. The relevant authorities should do what they are supposed to do.
