THE new generation of Arab rulers seems to be moving away from their traditional allies in the West, led by the United States, towards new friends, like the multilateral platform of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). The move has gained momentum since the easing of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. It was a deal in which China played a significant role.

Besides, China and India are the new major purchasers of crude oil from Saudi Arabia now. Even though China is not a prominent business partner in the Arab world, military cooperation has been on the rise between Beijing and Riyadh. On its part, Russia has spoken openly in favour of Palestinians against the Zionist Israel, and it also backed Iran’s decision to retaliate against Israel excesses.

Though the synergy is developing, the Gulf states would not want to leave the American camp in a hurry. They are sailing in several boats for several reasons by avoiding hostilities across the board.
