The US State Department has said it welcomes the nomination of a new Palestinian Authority (PA) cabinet, Al Jazeera reports.

“A revitalised PA is essential to delivering results for the Palestinian people in both the West Bank and Gaza and establishing the conditions for stability in the broader region,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement on Friday.

Mahmoud Abbas, president of the authority, which has limited powers in parts of the occupied West Bank, approved a new cabinet on Thursday.

Scheduled to take office on Sunday, the “top national priority” for the new government cabinet will be to end the war in Gaza, PA Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa said. The new cabinet “will work on formulating visions to reunify the institutions, including assuming responsibility for Gaza”, he said.

Mustafa replaces former Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh who, along with his government, resigned in February citing the need for change amid Israel’s onslaught on Gaza and escalating violence in the West Bank.
