PUBLIC transportation not only serves as a lifeline for many students in Lahore, but also provides them with affordable and convenient means to commute to their educational institutions. However, students often encounter a range of challenges when using the Metro and Speedo buses.

One of the most common problems on these buses is overcrowding. Another significant issue is inconsistency and frequent delays. Many students rely on these buses to arrive at their destina-tions on time, but disruptions in service or long waiting can lead to delays and missed classes.

Moreover, students with disabilities often face barriers when accessing public transportation. While efforts have been made to improve accessibility to Metro and Speedo buses, there is still room for improvement. Many students with mobility issues encounter difficulties, highlighting the need for greater inclusivity in public transportation services.

Further, incidents of harassment or theft, which are unfortunately not rare, make students vulnerable and appre-hensive about their commute.

Besides, the condition of buses and infrastructure also poses challenges for the students. Malfunctioning doors or faulty air conditioning systems not only compromise the comfort of the passengers, but also raise safety concerns.

Additionally, inadequate maintenance of the buses can and do often lead to their frequent breakdowns. Such an issue creates further inconvenience for the commuters.

Moreover, rising ticket prices and limited concessionary schemes have exacerbated the financial strain, forcing the students to make difficult trade-offs between transportation expenses and other essential needs.

There is a dire need to implement measures for regulating passenger flow and preventing overcrowding during peak hours.

Apart from the implementation of proposed regulations, strict adherence to bus schedules is needed at all times. Furthermore, upgrading infrastructure to cater to the needs of the people with disabilities and students, and increasing surveillance may prevent anti-social behaviour, and enhance passenger safety.

Besides, allocating resources for regular maintenance as well as introducing subsidised fares or student discount programmes would also bring further improvement.

By adopting these measures, the government can create a more efficient, inclusive and student-friendly public transportation system in Lahore, while bringing much relief to the commuters.
