LAHORE: The Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan on Saturday lit candles at Shadman Chowk here to mark the 93rd death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukh Dev, who were executed by the British colonial rulers for their struggle for an independent India.
The British rulers on March 23, 1931, hanged Bhagat Singh, along with his comrades Raj Guru and Sukh Dev, after their trial on the charge of hatching a conspiracy against the regime.
Singh was initially jailed for life but later awarded death sentence in another case.
Holding banners, the participants chanted slogans demanding “justice for Bhagat Singh”.
They passed a resolution demanding the government to grant Bhagat Singh and his comrades the status of national heroes and Pakistan’s top gallantry award.
They urged the Supreme Court to reopen the case of Singh and give him justice like it did in the case of late prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
The resolution also demands naming of Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh, who was hanged at the same place, then part of the jail, where the intersection is now situated.
Speaking on the occasion, the foundation’s chairman advocate Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi said peace between Pakistan and India is need of the hour and will benefit millions of people living in both countries.
Advocate Manzoor Ali Gilani, Raja Zulqernain, Mian Saeed and Malik Ahtashamul Hasan also spoke on the occasion.
