KARACHI: Fisheries authorities on Tuesday warned that the Karachi fish harbour was fast destroying as the number of boats operating from the facility had crossed the 2,500 mark against its original capacity of 500 fishing vessels.
The fresh number came during a briefing to adviser to Sindh chief minister on livestock and fisheries Syed Najmi Alam who chaired an introductory meeting of the department where the officials informed him about the issues being faced by the crucial economic sector of the country and emerging challenging.
A statement issued after the meeting said that the adviser sought an immediate plan to build a mini fish harbour at Ibrahim Hyderi to shift the burden from the Karachi fish harbour otherwise the growing number of boats at the facility could lead to serious damage to environment and the seafood economy.
“The meeting was told that there are more than 1,000 marine water resources within the coastal belt of the province which can be exploited for fishing activities and increasing the potential of the seafood exports from the country,” said the statement.
