LAHORE, March 7: The Punjab government has constituted a commission representing growers, millers and the consumers to probe the factors behind sugar crisis. Punjab Food Minister Muhammad Iqbal said this here on Tuesday while addressing a press conference.

The minister said that the commission would also prepare recommendations to evolve a strategy for avoiding such crises in future. It would also suggest long and short term measures to come out of the current sugar issue.

He said a committee headed by the Planning and Development chairman was already working to prepare proposals for new sugar policy which would soon be presented to the chief minister. He hoped that after the arrival of next cane crop the strategy to control the prices would be working and there would be no crisis of the commodity.

Speaking on subsidised sugar for the poor, he said coupons being used by the deserving families for the purchase of wheat and flour would be used to get sugar.—APP
