The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, met with the head of Hamas’s political bureau, Ismael Haniyeh, in Qatar, the humanitarian group has said in a statement, Al Jazeera reports.

The ICRC added that Spoljaric met separately with officials from the Qatari government during the visit, saying that while it did not take part in negotiations, it was ready to “facilitate the implementation of humanitarian aspects of any agreement”.

“The visit by President Spoljaric is part of ICRC’s direct discussions with all sides in the conflict and other members of the international community in the region and beyond to improve respect for international humanitarian law and relieve the humanitarian suffering of people in Gaza and Israel,” the statement read.
