LAHORE: A convoy of 16 trucks entered Russia on Sunday carrying Pakistani kinnows.

The convoy, comprising refrigerated trucks of National Logistics Corporation (NLC) laden with kinnows, arrived in Russian cities of Derbent and Grozny, covering almost 6,000 km distance as Russian authorities applauded the NLC efforts for the promotion of bilateral trade between the two countries.

The trucks traversed two countries – Iran and Azerbaijan – instead of Afghanistan to arrive in Russia in 18 days. Earlier, Pakistan has been exporting kinnow to Russia through sea route which took months to reach the destination.

Pakistan is a top exporter of kinnow, a variety of citrus fruit which is in high demand across the globe because of its taste and quality.

However, lack of cold chain facility has been hindering its exports beyond borders, particularly through land routes. With reefer capabilities, NLC ventured into fruits exports allowing Pakistani traders to tap the previously untapped markets.

Reefer trucks maintain temperatures to help kinnow remain fresh for a longer time during transit.

Earlier, NLC also provided logistic support to export of bananas, meat and seafood to Central Asian Republics and China.

Pakistan had placed its first order for discounted Russian crude oil under a new deal struck between Islamabad and Moscow in April last year.

Experts say that the launch of the direct cargo service has reshaped trade relations between both countries, with immense business opportunities and the potential to extend bilateral trade up to $20 billion.

Currently, Pakistan’s exports to Russia stand at $150 million, while imports hover around $300 million.
