VOLUNTEERISM: I recently got the courage to step out of my comfort zone and work for a non-governmental organisation (NGO) as a volunteer. To my surprise, I was neither encouraged nor appreciated during my short association. There is no concept of volunteerism in Pakistan. Organisations that conduct cleaning drives or care for the elderly, orphans and animals need more volunteers. It is important for youngsters to understand the problems of society, and make an effort to resolve them. NGOs, academic institutions and parents must encourage participation in such activities.

KARACHI’S GARBAGE: The recent Karachi Eat Festival ended up producing a humongous amount of waste. On the first day alone, the grounds were littered with bottles, plastic cups, discarded food, tissue papers and just abaout anything imaginable under the circumstances. The rest of the days only added to the piles and dumps of trash. Although the event was great, its waste production was much greater. People were appointed to pick up the trash throughout the day, and trash cans were also placed inside the venue, but nothing could keep the area clean. Without proper waste management plans being inplace, Karachi’s garbage problem will remain unaddressed.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS: Contrary to the rather misplaced argument that Pakistani parents prefer private schools for their children due to their colonial mindset, the fact is that parents do not fall for social trends, they choose what is best for their children’s well- being and development. Despite struggling financially, parents prefer private schools because they provide individual attention to students, better access to education, and a better environment compared to public-sector schools. Parents do not follow cultural parameters. They certainly choose what is of benefit to their children.
