KARACHI: A local leader of the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) was shot at and wounded in New Karachi on Tuesday evening, police and his party said.

The police said that Bilal Murshid, 30, was targeted by armed assailants riding a motorbike in the Godhra area in Sector 11-G. He suffered five bullet wounds and was taken first to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from where he was moved to the Liaquat National Hospital in a critical condition.

The police were reluctant to share the possible motive behind the attack. However, an ASWJ spokesperson said that it was a targeted attack on Bilal.

He said that the caretaker government had failed to maintain peace in the city. He demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Riffat Mukhtar Raja took notice of the incident and directed the DIG-West to probe the incident from all aspects and submit him a report.
