NOTA option

Published November 21, 2023

THIS refers to the letter ‘People should have the right to reject’ (Oct 27), urging the authorities to give the voters ‘none of the above’ (NOTA) option in the coming elections. I endorse the proposal on the basis of my experience of having been a presiding officer in the public franchise.

I was surprised to find that a large number of voters sit at home and deliberately refrain from casting their votes, showing complete lack of interest in the national exercise. Hence, the NOTA option is a solution to the problem, and, in fact, is a voter’s right.

It is beyond doubt that the elected representatives abandon the electorate after getting elected, and are hardly ever seen in their constituencies. They forget their promises and commitments made during the election campaign. All that they aim for is to amass wealth or benefits during their time in the assemblies.

Pakistan’s political history is replete with examples of politicians who are opportunistic and self-centred. They get involved in horse-trading without any remorse and other malpractices. Unfortunately, they betray the people and lose confidence reposed in them by the nation. They ignore the fact that it is the choice of the people that enables them to occupy seats in the legislature.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is expected to give a serious consideration to the idea of including the NOTA option in the coming elections.
