LAHORE: University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences’ (UVAS) Institute of Microbiology, Livestock and Dairy Development Department (L&DD) and China Agriculture University on Wednesday held a day-long training forum on livestock disease control.

Punjab Agriculture Research Board Chief Executive Officer Dr Abid Mahmood presided over the inaugural session and L&DD Secretary Masood Anwar chaired the concluding session while Chinese Consul General Mr Zhao Shiren was the guest of honour.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad, Project Leader College of Veterinary Medicine, China Agriculture University Prof Dr He Cheng, Director Institute of Microbiology (IOM) Prof Dr Aftab Ahmed Anjum and students were present.

Dr Mahmood said it is direly needed to learn about new technologies and techniques to meet international standards to enhance dairy and meat products export in international markets.

He said different areas of Punjab have been declared disease-free zones for livestock and such training is necessary to learn about new experiences especially to control major livestock diseases.

He said UVAS’s collaborative partnership with Chinese academic and business industry would be more beneficial for both countries not only to promote research but also for enhancing exports as well.

Mr Anwar said the livestock department is actively working to fulfill international standards to establish [foot and mouth disease] FMD-free compartments in Punjab for enhancing dairy and meat export.

Prof Ahmed urged the Chinese to assist UVAS regarding biologics production, vaccine development and promote Pak-China linkages to enhance indigenous vaccines with technology transfer.

Mr Zhao Shiren assured his full support for successful collaboration in promotion of academic and business linkages and for enhancing trade ties between Pakistan and China.

Dr Aftab Ahmed Anjum spoke about the aim and objectives of training, presentation topics and presented vote of thanks.

A total of 50 participants/professionals were trained in the forum.
